Composed in 1951 - 1954. Fourth movement unfinished. At first the four movements had programmatic headings: "Disaster", "Under compulsion to life", "Beyond" and "The conflict continues". The first three movements were premiered March 6, 1956 in Berlin by the Berlin Philharmonic under Joseph Keilberth.

Completed in 1908. The slow movement premiered February 1906 in Munich by the Kaim Orchestra under Wilhelm Furtwängler. The composer took the principal theme of the Largo as the leading theme for the first movement of his Symphony Nº1.
